Dreamless in downturn!

Following the meltdown bank lending has fallen drastically. The alternative options aren’t easy either, says Sunanda Roy

Bang#@$! That’s what you must be hearing by the time you read this. Yes, your dream house, dream car, dream travel plan and so many other dreams (definitely, those supposed to be funded by bank loans) have just been hammered to pieces by the bankers. Wondering how? Well, just try to avail a loan today, and you get to know everything. The prevailing loan situation is worth pondering over - loans are becoming dearer day by day, with banks adopting stringent norms and tightening all loopholes. After all they also don’t like to risk their money, when the whole world is going gaga under the financial crisis and liquidity crunch.

Their cautiousness can be well judged from the fact that subsequent to the slump in realty markets, banks have nearly doubled the margin money (the percentage of purchase price that the buyer has to get to the table) for home loans to 40% from the prevailing 20-25%. That simply means that for buying a house a bank won’t lend you more than 60% of the purchase price. Looking at the ongoing crisis, banks now want to make sure that even in the case of a sharp fall in prices and a default on part of the borrower, they should be able to recuperate the loan amount. And this has come at a time when high interest rates have already made house purchases dearer. Private as well as Public - many banks, if not all, have augmented the margin money by 5% to 25% depending on the amount borrowed. However, the best news for many is the fact that the country’s largest private lender ICICI Bank has not changed its margin money requirement yet. “We have not made any changes in the margin money requirement for home loans. We have been fairly prudent in our lending process,” said an ICICI Bank spokesperson.

All the segments in loan portfolio have seen some recent slowdown. The latest numbers from auto majors show a decline in sales, and undoubtedly scarcity of loan providers can be termed as a reason for the same. In case of home loans and car loans, most people have postponed their purchases. Educational loan is usually not something you can afford to postpone – so that’s left aside! However, banks are taking rigorous actions to guarantee that only borrowers with sound repayment capability are extended the advances. The tough loan apparatus and higher margin condition have definitely put a check on the practice where house buyers could borrow roughly the full sale consideration, up to 85% of the price in loan and the balance for furnishing the house. Harsh Roongta, CEO, Apnaloan.com told 4Ps B&M, “Of late demand has certainly come down a bit on home loans, with changes in the eligibility criteria, there has been mismatch of demand and supply in the loan appetite, be it home loans, car loans or personal loans.”

For a loan seeker, for sure, this is the right time for a soliloquy - am I taking this loan for the right reason, as the interest rates on most floating rate loans, be it home, car or personal, have also escalated by almost 3-4% in last couple of months. On the other hand, the soaring inflation has made cost of living go up. Considering all the points, it’s definitely advisable that with more mess, to mess you up, like job instability and declining income it is better to avoid a financial mess at the moment.

In general, housing loans are considered safe as one is investing in an asset. And in case of any trouble one can readily sale it off at an appreciated price to recover his money and along with some profit. But the ongoing correction in housing prices has put that philosophy in jeopardy. Hence, one must be patient before you decide to go for a loan and buy a property.

So, would we thus conclude that the credit crunch is somehow crunching down the loan disbursal by banks and the capacity of people to obtain it? Well, as per Anil Mascarenhas, Editor, India Infoline, “Recent months have seen a crunch. But the situation will gradually improve with the RBI’s latest measures over the weekend.”

Banks are cautious, and customers are dubious. What shall be done then? If even after reconsidering the need for a loan one finds out that there is actually a requirement, then where does one get to avail such need of the hour? Though limited in number, there are few alternative options available actually. The first and foremost which comes to mind are the next door money lenders. But then be prepared for an unbelievably high rate if you go for it. It’s adviced only when banks decline to end someone. A loan from peers in times of need could well be an option to ponder over. But considering the crunch, the difference between possibility and probability apparently seems to be on the higher side. NBFCs present themselves as a good option, but again their operational credentials need to be known. For tiding over short term needs people can avail of overdraft facilities and credit card loans. In the worst case scenario one can alternatively pledge their assets including home and jewellery and even encash their fixed deposits to realise their dreams. But as mentioned it’s too harsh an option to abide by.

Interest rates could, however, may come down soon - making loans cheaper and saving less attractive as the central bank has cut the rate at which it lends short-term funds to banks by half a percentage point apart from infusing an additional Rs.1,200 billion crore into the banking system. On the other hand, stress on banks to slash rates has risen sharply in the past few days with the RBI making clear that the crisis could only be resolved if banks followed up with measures to enhance demand and maintain spending. But still it’s a distant dream, till then let’s wait and watch and put a control on our dreams. Else, again we will get to here something like Bang@#$!

Virtually yours... in our 2nd lives! - "IIPM-News"

Siddharth Banerjee, CEO & Founder, Indusgeeks Solutions talks about why the virtual world holds great promises for marketers and brands alike...

Virtual worlds like Second Life burst onto the digital marketing scene in early 2006 and since then it’s been a roller coaster ride for marketers. In the early days most marketers correctly realised the potential of this medium to immerse their audiences in to the brand narrative but could not implement or create an effective virtual marketing campaign.

As virtual worlds continue to grow and their registered user base touches about 400 million users by some estimates; it’s increasingly important for marketers to understand what works in these worlds.

Virtual worlds such as Second Life are a hybrid of web and contact marketing. They combine the advantages of technology and latest web trends like social networking, video sharing with the proximity and immersion of contact marketing. They create engaging user experiences being entertaining, interactive and immersive.

Second Life vs. Other Virtual Worlds...

Although Second Life started it all, but it isn’t the only virtual world out there. There are many others like There (used by Coke and MTV), Gaia, et al. The choice of a virtual world or a combination of them that is best suited for a brand depends on the demographics, target audience, customer experience, et al, just as in the case of traditional web marketing. Virtual worlds can also be custom created for a brand and allow embedded brand advertising – Barbie Girls, Lego Universe are popular flash based virtual worlds targeted at teens and youth across the globe.

Branded and interactive virtual worlds can be effectively used to create loyal communities around brands. Long term community interaction, for instance Sunsilk’s ‘Gang of Girls’ – is essential both for community as well as marketing. Interactive virtual worlds can also be integrated with existing online communities such as Facebook (YoVille – Flash based virtual world application on Facebook which has about 1,50,000 daily users).

That brings us to another potentially interesting application of virtual worlds – distributed virtual worlds or embeddable virtual worlds.

Using Embedded Virtual Worlds...

So far most of the popular virtual worlds like Second Life, There, Gaia, et al are client-based as opposed to browser-based applications. But with the growing popularity of the medium, a need to embed these virtual worlds into browsers is growing. This is especially relevant for web marketing and network marketing purposes. Just as social networking platforms like ‘Ning’ and Google’s ‘OpenSocial’ make it possible to host a social network on your own website/portal as opposed to walled gardens like Facebook; distributed virtual world platforms created using Flash, Java, et al allow virtual worlds to be hosted on a company’s or an individual’s website.

This leads to the usual networking effects witnessed in social networks wherein a friend can be invited to hop onto your virtual space on your website which is in turn connected to a whole grid of such spaces allowing for both public as well as private virtual experiences. Embeddable virtual worlds are in the early stages of development and their growth will have a significant effect in using virtual worlds for digital and interactive marketing.

3 ghosts of the future?!

US giants need a bailout package of $75 billion. Now!

The newly elected US President Barack Obama recently met the current president George Bush and spoke about a series of issues, including bailout packages for the US auto majors. The situation of the US auto sector is even worse than that of India, as the auto majors are begging for bailouts, with all urgency! The accused in this case are the three Detroit giants – Ford, GM and Chrysler, whose financials are getting worse, every passing month! The three automakers have asked for a $50 billion package from the US government, which will help them combat the current crisis. Interestingly, this figure doesn’t include the additional $25 billion which the government has agreed to grant to the automakers to produce energy efficient vehicles.

Well, in a situation where almost five million jobs rely on the auto sector, falling apart of the sector surely means a state of urgency! It is a situation where the stock prices of these auto giants is tumbling by the trading hour and their operating cost shows no signs of falling. Surely, for now, it’s about breathing hard, underwater for the giants. Strange though, it was the same trio that once ruled the world of automakers. Today, they have been reduced to brands that might just becomes ghosts for the American future. Obama, you there? Bailout is the word!

The Colour of Retail

Angshuman Paul discovers that the green mania has gripped global retailers like never before. Reducing wastage is after all the core tenet of good management. Ask Lee Scott!

It’s that time of the year again when reindeers, stockings, mistletoes (uh... for the romantically inclined!) and gifts are in vogue. Same time last year, a survey carried out in the US confirmed two things. One, that if they had a choice, more than two-thirds of consumers would gift ‘green’ during Christmas season and two, 68% believed that environmentally friendly gifts cost more. Reacting to this, the world’s largest retailer Wal-Mart zeroed in on an ingenious way to entice consumers: It launched affordable and eco-friendly stocking stuffers, which flew off the shelves much faster than anticipated. The gifts, among others, included, a double-disc set of Eagles’ Long Road Out of Eden packaged in sustainable paper; Bamboo socks (which naturally fight odor), organic coffee, fruit, natural cosmetics, eco-friendly toothbrushes, et al. Vying for attention were also organic cotton pajamas!!!

As December approaches again, it logically follows, that cash-strapped consumers should steel themselves against more such green goodies that global retailers will push their way. Echoes, Mario Pilozzi, CEO of Wal-Mart Canada, “We have found that there is a great marriage between environmental sustainability and business sustainability.” The season is, after all, every retailer’s last hope for brightening up their sales figures, ahead of the year closing in a credit squeezed global economy. Retailers cashing in on the ‘green’ bug is nothing new. Sector analyst confirms that over the past decade, every global retailer – from Lee Scott’s Wal-Mart to Gregg Steinhafel’s Tesco – has developed a hitherto hidden penchant for ‘green.’ The reason lies in the ability of green to attract green. Yes! Resorting to environmental initiatives, apart from attracting media attention and keeping away regulatory pressure, is helping retailers mint big money. “Environmental sustainability and business sustainability often go hand in hand,” points out Natalie Berg, Grocery Research Manager, Planet Retail. His reasoning does not only encompass the consumer’s increasing awareness and demand for green products in supermarkets, but also takes into account the fact that going green also helps reduce overall operating expenses for retailers, since energy (electricity) tends to be the biggest operating expense incurred by supermarkets. “Grocers are embracing a variety of eco-friendly attributes in store – ranging from LED lighting to rainwater harvesting – which are not only good for the environment but also help reduce their energy costs,” he avers.

Another way in which retailer’s are getting returns from their ‘green’ investments is the last 5 seconds of any marketing programme - We refer to the fourth P viz. Packaging. For instance, bags used by green retailers are reusable and recyclable and employees are trained to add more items per bag, reducing overall packaging cost. Mark & Spencer, made a bold move earlier this year by becoming the first major retailer to launch a nationwide carrier bag charging programme. To their dismay, however, there was a huge protest from consumers across UK . But, though there may have been some teething problems around customer inconvenience, “carrier bag usage is down by 80%,” explains Berg. Moreover, retail specialists claims that in regions like Europe where private labels command an equal if not bigger market share than big brands, most in-store labels are promoted as eco-friendly brands and the unique positioning helps retailers steal the show from big brands. No wonder Carrefour Eco Planète (a ‘natural’ tagged private label from Carrefour) is one of the most popular brand’s in its category and Carrefour holds the distinction of being France’s largest organic products retailer. Carrefour also is a propounder of recyclable bags. Even German super value store Aldi promotes its store brands with eco-friendly paper bags.

In tune, the global organic and eco-friendly market is growing by 39%, a mouth-watering delight for retailers in UK and USA. “In concentrated markets like Switzerland, USA and UK, supermarkets play a much greater role in community and that’s why these players are successful is promoting organic food,” explains Jonathan Banks, Business Insight Director, The Nielsen Company, UK.

About a year ago, when Lee Scott unveiled Sustainability 360 for engaging Wal-Mart’s associates, suppliers and customers in his ‘green’ campaign, altruism was far from his mind. He was indeed thinking about the great business sense it makes to reduce waste (of energy and packaging) on the one hand, and make money by selling environmentally friendly products, on the other. Sustainablity is vital for profitability, at least for retailers, it seems. Long Road Out of Eden gift-wrapped in sustainable paper, anyone?

India's Most wanted

The name of Hafiz Mohammad Saeed is missing from the list of terrorists India gave to Pakistan by TSI's Niloo Ranjan Kumar

The 40 odd terrorists that have taken refuge in Pakistan have had a past of conducting and facilitating terror activities in India. In fact, names of some or other of these terrorists have figured in the recent incidents of terror acts in Hyderabad, Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi and Jammu & Kashmir. India has substantial proofs against these terrorists to nail them and that is why it has asked Pakistan to hand them over. The Sunday Indian has the list of these terrorists in its procession.

However, the fact that is bewildering is that the list does not find the mention of LeT chief Hafiz Saeed. One of the senior officers from the Home Ministry, on the condition of anonymity, confirmed TSI that LeT has figured in several terror acts in the country including ones in J&K and Mumbai. However, there are no conclusive proofs that can connect Hafiz with these acts of terror directly. That is why his name is missing from the list. However, there are clear and direct indication of his involvement in the recent terror attacks in Mumbai as per the preliminary investigations. The name of Saeed will only figure after the agencies collect conclusive evidence to nail him.

The name of underworld don, Dawood Ibrahim, figures on the top of the list. Dawood is accused of abetting and masterminding the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts. A red corner notice by the Interpol has been issued against him since long. However, Pakistan has always denied his presence on its soil. On the other hand, Indian intelligence agencies have the address of Dawood’s Karachi hideout.

Apart from Dawood, the Mumbai terror attack list also includes 19 other names. All of them are charged with masterminding and abetting the crime. Of them, only Aftab Batki is Pakistani; rests all are Indians. And all of them have taken refuge in Pakistan. Another officer from the intelligence agency confirmed that Dawood and his gang still provide logistic support in the terror acts against India. Apart from that, his gang directly participates in terror acts, reports suggest. Of course, he does it goaded by ISI, Pakistan’s dreaded intelligence agency. In fact, Dawood’s relation with ISI is not limited to terror activities only. Dawood’s logistical framework in India helps ISI in carrying out its fake currency business. While ISI publishes these notes in Pakistan, Dawood’s henchmen help them bring in and distribute these notes. Apart from that, Dawood also helps ISI in its drugs and illegal arms trade. A large part of the revenue is used for funding terror activities.
Apart from them, others on the wanted list include the six who are accused of hijacking Indian Airlines plane IC-814 in the year 1999. In these, apart from Saeed Shahid Akhtar, rests all are Pakistani. Akhtar too is in Pakistan and India has asked Pakistan to hand him over. In 1999, India had to bow down to terrorist’s demand when under pressure BJP-led NDA government had to release three dreaded terrorists including Maulana Masood Azhar. Azhar went on to establish Jaish-e-Mohammad whose name later figured in numerous terror strikes in India including the attack on Indian Parliament in 2001. The subsequent investigation had nailed Azhar. India had then asked Pakistan to hand over Masood Azhar.

After the recent Mumbai strike, amidst international pressure, Pakistan government announced that it has house-arrested Azhar. However, few days later, in a typical Pakistani style, the government claimed that Azhar was not in Pakistan.

The list further includes names of eight Kashmiri terrorists whose names have figured in the terror attacks in J&K and other parts of India. The name of Hizb-ul-Mujahideen chief Maulana Yusuf Shah alias Sayyed Salahuddin figures on the top of the list. Apart from that, names of Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front's (JKLF) Amanullah Khan and Firoz Abdullah also find mentions in the list. It also includes name of Zaki-ur-Rahman Lakhvi alias Chacha, who has been accused of masterminding last month’s Mumbai attack. According to Pakistan, Lakhvi has been arrested following UN’s decision to ban Jama-ud-Dawa. It is said that Lakhvi is the operation head of LeT. This list also includes the name of Amir Raza Khan, the key man in several blasts in India. He is said to be the head of Indian Mujahideen. HUJI commander Mohammad Abdul Sahid alias Bilal, LeT’s Azam Cheema and 2006 Mumbai train blast mastermind Rahil Sheikh also figure in the list.

Terrorism in Punjab might have died for all practical purposes but Pakistan is trying hard to rekindle it. It has given refuge to several Khalistani separatists. It includes Gajinger Singh Khalsa, the head of ‘Dal Khalsa International’ that hijacked an Air India plane in 1981. His name figures in the list. Others in this list are the members of Sikh Youth Federation, Khalistan Commando Force and Babbar Khalsa International.

The list of wanted terrorists who are staying in Pakistan is increasing by the year. But Pakistan has been reluctant on acting on these names.

Ratan Tata to sing in C'h'orus!

The problem for Ratan Tata keeps on mounting. His international acquisitions and investments are being hammered by the global slowdown and financial crunch. To overcome one such problem, Tata Steel, has finally laid down plans to merge its Britain based unit Corus by next year. The merger would make the group the second largest steel producer, next only to the Luxembourg based ArcelorMittal. The move has been taken to cut down on input costs and to save up to 350 million pounds. The merger puts thousands of jobs at risk as issuance of pinks slips seems inevitable. Nevertheless, given the current economic situation and feasible synergies of the alliance with Tata Steel’s construction-related assets which are likely to gain from Corus in the UK and Tata steel contributing through supply of raw materials, it does make sense for Ratan Tata to go ahead in the best interest of the company.
