A bloodstained decade...

The world gets more and more vulnerable to the terrorism menace

Terror atrocity has emerged as a nightmare, causing unpardonable damage to life and property; be it among businesses, civilians, diplomats or governments. There were terror attacks earlier as well, but as a new tool of grabbing attention to insensible ideologies; terrorism’s face is uglier than ever before.

The rapid ascendance of terror atrocities and emergence of non-state elements is sickening. Irrespective of which religion, cast or creed they belong, terrorists pose a big threat and an intractable challenge before the world community. The world witnessed terror incidents and their severity since as early as the 19th century and this has just kept increasing. For example, in a span of 21 years from 1982 to 2003, around 9,484 attacks took place. Though casualties were not properly reported, as per the US State Government’s statistical database, around 21,950 people died in a span of just six years from 1998 to 2003. While the first decade of this century was the most violent, the years 2006 and 2007 proved to be the deadliest.

Over 14,000 attacks took place in 2006, claiming more than 20,000 lives. While the number of attacks increased to 14,506 with casualties at an astounding 22,508 in 2007, it saw a slight decline in 2008 with 11,770 incidences and 15,765 deaths. Thankfully, 2009 saw a steady decline even as Pakistan remained a safe-haven for terror groups.

In spite of tremendous progress in military capabilities, the world is still vulnerable to terror strikes. While humans have made progress in many ways, the number of people joining terror groups is increasing; and this is not just restricted to the poor and the illiterate.
